Your book
Book pages come in multiples of 4 (each folded leaf = 4 pages). Count only the inside pages — covers are usually printed and counted separately.

How books are built
From flat sheet to bound book
A book isn’t printed a page at a time — it’s printed in folded sections called signatures.
One sheet, many pages. A press sheet printed both sides and folded becomes a signature: fold once for 4 pages, twice for 8, three times for 16, four times for 32.
Gather & bind. For perfect binding, signatures are stacked and glued at a flat spine. For saddle-stitch, folded sheets are nested and stapled through the middle.
Fill the last signature. If your content doesn’t reach a full signature, blank pages are added so the section folds correctly — the tool shows exactly how many.
Questions
Signatures & binding — FAQ
What is a signature in bookbinding?+
A signature (or section) is a single large sheet printed with several pages and folded down into a group of book pages. Signatures are gathered and bound together to make the book. A folded sheet gives pages in multiples of 4.
How many pages are in a signature?+
Most commonly 16 pages (a sheet folded three times), but 8 pages (two folds) and 32 pages (four folds) are also standard. Smaller signatures waste fewer pages; larger ones mean less folding and binding.
Why must book pages be a multiple of 4?+
Each folded leaf has a front and back — 4 pages come from one folded sheet section. If your content doesn’t land on a multiple of 4 (or of your signature size), blank pages are added to fill the last signature.
Saddle-stitch or perfect binding — which do I need?+
Saddle-stitch (stapled through the spine) suits thin booklets up to roughly 80 pages. Perfect binding (a glued flat spine) suits thicker books and gives a printable spine. This tool works out both.
